My $42,000 Mountain Bike

Back in March 2018, I decided to take a month with my family in Mexico. We enrolled our kids in a local private school while we stayed near Sayulita, close to Puerto Vallarta. Some friends of ours, who also had kids, were already living there, and they showed us the ropes of the area. Having so much free time while the kids were at school gave way to lots of conversation with our friends. This trip was part of a bigger journey, as we were trying to figure out where we wanted to settle down long-term. And, thanks to these friends, we eventually landed in Heber Valley, where we’re living now.

While in Mexico, I got an invite to go mountain biking with a group of founders in St. George. Only problem is I didn’t have a bike. I told my friend Scott Ward about it, who was with me in Mexico, and he mentioned he was selling his yellow Santa Cruz bike. Without even seeing it, I bought it from him on the spot so I could go on this ride when I got home, paying him in bitcoin—0.5 BTC, or about $4,000 at the time.

That bike has been with me ever since. I consider it one of the best and worst deals I’ve ever made:) I’m most happy because Scott, the HODLer he is, kept the bitcoin instead of cashing out. I also loved this bike and it got Natalie and I into the sport, which has been priceless for our marriage. Fast forward to today, and that 0.5 BTC has turned into around $42,000 in his Coinbase account—making this bike a legend in its own right.

I will never sell the Bitcoin Bike, It will go in my office on mounted to the wall as a momento about the power of transacting with this new currency.

Happy BTC Moonday :)
