Ramadan in Japan
Last April I was wondering through Japan with my family.
I was trying to overcome jet lag upon arriving in Tokyo and went on an early morning walk in a park and met a man speaking English who was from Malaysia.
He was a Muslim missionary in Japan and he had a Youtube channel where he spoke of his faith to an audience around the world.
He invited me to the Mosque there in Akihabara to break fast at sundown with his congregation.
I invited my whole family and to my surprise they were down to get all covered up and stay in another room while the men did prayer in Arabic in another room. I really loved when a little kid got up to do one of their prayers you can see here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/63r3tz84QogM6QYq7
I was given front row in a room of 80 people and got to see the same man I met in the park conduct the entire ceremony.
Next at an amazing Halal meal of meat and rice and curry and soup and everyone we met treated my family like we were part of their family.
I always try to go inside the mind of my 8 year old daughter and imagine what she is thinking about. I forget how little context she has for everything we experienced in that country.
I often think that the many religions of the world should be on a massive bingo card that we try to fill completely in our lifetime. I’m sure being a small part of every religion is way more interesting than being part of none or one.
