Enabling or Empowering

Jul 13, 2024 · Scott Paul · 215 words

Our oldest is off to college.  There are no right answers on how to do this stage of life.  Natalie feels like she has no idea what she is doing.  Well, guess what, an oldest kid is basically first time for everything, and you have no muscle memory for any of it.  We actually have no idea what we are doing because you haven’t done it. This messes with the oldest kid, of which I am.

Do we buy her a car? Do we let her venture out and have her pay own way?  We have the resources to make it so she doesn’t need to work, but is that enabling her or empowering her. All day we wrestled with this question on how to send a teen out in the world and what to equip her with. I know each kid is different but there has to be some stats for best practices?

Anyway… Today is one of those days for me that just isn’t clicking and I’m am without answers on how to be the best help and not hinder my offspring.

Got out on the lake yesterday and if anyone is wanting to paddle board let me know as I’m spending most of the days working from the shore in July
